Kitchen Cabinet Renewal: Before and After

The layout still works, but you want the kitchen to feel different. Should you retain the cabinets, renew the fronts or commission a new kitchen? Two different transformations from the workshop archive help explain what needs to be assessed.

01 / A CLOSER LOOK

The same layout, a different colour balance

The earlier photograph shows light timber fronts and a patterned splashback. In the later image, darker lower cabinets and lighter upper cabinets create a different balance within the existing layout. The photographs demonstrate the visual change; they do not by themselves establish the product brand, substrate or durability. A new renewal project starts with assessing the actual fronts and cabinet bodies.

02 / A CLOSER LOOK

When might the cabinet bodies be retained?

Choosing a colour is only one part of renewing fronts or finishes. Swelling, loose joints, doors that no longer close and difficult drawers also need inspection. If the layout does not meet your needs, changing the fronts alone may leave the storage problem untouched. Dimensions, appliance spaces, worktops and service positions help compare renewal with a newly made kitchen.

Another transformation: retained timber in fitted cabinetry

The other archive example records older timber components at the start and a completed fitted-cabinet arrangement. The front pattern, upper section and side finishes work together. For a similar brief, the condition of retained components, adaptation to new dimensions and hardware choices need separate consideration. The same approach will not suit every old cabinet.

Starting condition: timber components to be assessed for reuse.

Make the comparison for your own kitchen

Send an overall photograph, the inside of the cabinets, hinges and any problem areas. Include approximate dimensions and the practical issues you want to solve. We can discuss the different scopes of a finish refresh, front and hardware renewal, or a new made-to-measure kitchen. Explore the kitchen design guide for layout and storage ideas.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Before you begin.

Can my cabinets be renewed without full removal?

It depends on the condition, chosen approach and installation requirements. Photographs can start the discussion; a visit may be required.

Can you match the colour in a photograph?

Photographs and screens can show colours differently. Final colour and finish selections are best confirmed using physical samples.
