Choosing Timber Colour, Texture and Finish

Timber character can feel very different with a change of colour and finish. Close views from the workshop archive show grain, carving and patina effects. Use them to start a discussion, then confirm your own furniture finish with a sample.

01 / A CLOSER LOOK

Reveal the grain or soften its presence?

In the turquoise example, colour brings out the lines in the timber rather than hiding them. A finish like this can make a small table, front or decorative piece a focal point. In a quieter interior, the timber and wall colours need to be considered together. Look at the balance of light and dark across the surface as well as the colour name.

02 / A CLOSER LOOK

Colour on carved surfaces

The carved example does not appear as one uniform tone: raised and recessed areas read differently, changing the way the pattern is seen. A sample helps define the desired effect for new work. An older piece needs assessment of its existing finish and the character to be retained; one sanding or painting approach will not suit every antique.

A dark finish changes with the light

The dark close-up shows grain and reflections together. A single photograph on a phone is a limited basis for a final selection. Where possible, examine a sample in the intended space under daylight and artificial light. Comparing it alongside the existing stone, metal, fabrics and walls makes the decision more useful.

A short film from the workshop

The film records hand surface work on a furniture leg. It is an archive record rather than step-by-step DIY instruction. Repeating the approach without knowing the existing coating, substrate and products may not produce the same result. Send photographs of your piece and an example of the finish you like so we can discuss suitable options.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Before you begin.

Will the finished colour match my screen?

Screens, lighting and image processing can change perceived colour. The timber itself also affects the result; final selections are confirmed with samples.
